Superintendent update

POSTED 11/19/2013
OESJ Board of Education to begin negotiations with superintendent
The Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Board of Education voted Monday, Nov. 18 to begin negotiations with Superintendent Laura Lawrence concerning her employment status with the district.

During a special meeting, the OESJ board voted 4 to 3 to direct the district’s law firm, Gentick, Livingston, Atkinson and Priore, to begin negotiations with Lawrence, who was placed on paid administrative leave by a split board vote on Nov. 6.

Board members Cindy Breh, Neil Clark, William Lints and Susanne Sammons, the same board members who voted in favor of placing Lawrence on leave, voted in favor of beginning the negotiations. Members Keith Handy, Lee Quackenbush and Renee Swartz voted against.

By a 6-1 vote in June, the OESJ board approved a three-year contract with Lawrence. While Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Patrick Michel will continue to serve as the acting OESJ superintendent until further notice, Lawrence’s contract currently remains in effect.
As it is a personnel matter, Dr. Michel said board members’ reasons for placing Lawrence on leave will not be discussed publicly.

In his statutory role as representative of the New York State Education Department, Dr. Michel is required to assume the responsibility of superintendent in any HFM BOCES component district when the position becomes vacant.
