OESJ Spelling Bee winner

OESJ eighth grader heading to Capital Region Spelling Bee
Eighth grader Katherine Sampere outlasted 30 of the district’s best spellers to win the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Central School District Spelling Bee Friday, Jan. 10. 

Sampere will now go on to compete at the Capital Region Spelling Bee at Proctor’s Theatre in Schenectady. The winner of the regional spelling contest will go on to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. this spring.

Friday’s bee lasted a total of 25 rounds with Sampere correctly spelling the word scheme for the win. 

The runner-up Friday was sixth grader Shaina Golladay. Seventh graders Jack Brundage and Adam Schuyler finished in third and fourth place, respectively.                                 

Contestants in the OESJ Spelling Bee were: Margaret Christensen, Isabella Dittmer, Jesse Walrath, Hayley Wright, Michael Pabis-Sweeney, Baylee Wood, Ashley Johnson, Joshua Montes, Seth Richardson, Sierra Smith, Jacob Snell, Mary Thompson, Dylan Corapi, Chad Gallt, Harmony Garren, Shaina Golladay, Cameron Sharp, Dustin Smith, Gabriel Brown, Jack Brundage, Thysha Boyer, Faith McFarland, Adam Schuyler, Carlin Straney, Mackenzie Christman, Dakota Corapi, Tyler Frolke, Zachery Quill, Madison Richardson and Katherine Sampere. 

Classroom spelling bees in grades four through eight decided who advanced to the district wide bee. 

As the first place winner, Sampere received a $50 Walmart gift card. The second, third and fourth place winners each received $25 Walmart gift cards.
