OESJ acting superintendent

POSTED 12/5/2013
OESJ board to begin reviewing applicants for acting superintendent
The Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsvile Board of Education will soon begin reviewing nine candidates who have applied to serve as acting superintendent for the district.

At the board’s Wednesday, Dec. 4 meeting, the district’s current acting superintendent, Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Patrick Michel, said he would forward candidate information to board members by today, Dec. 5.

Once board members have reviewed the candidates, Michel said, they will decide which candidates to interview and finalize a timeline for the hiring process.

On Nov. 6, the OESJ board voted 4-3 to place OESJ Superintendent Laura Lawrence on paid administrative leave. On Nov. 18, the board directed its law firm to begin negotiations with Lawrence concerning her employment status with the district.

As it is a personnel matter, Dr. Michel said board members’ reasons for placing Lawrence on leave will not be discussed publicly.

In his statutory role as representative of the New York State Education Department, Dr. Michel is required to assume the responsibility of superintendent in any HFM BOCES component district when the position becomes vacant. He serves as acting superintendent at no cost to the district.

Citing the demands of his schedule, Michel has advised the board to hire a full-time acting superintendent for the district.
