State Board of Regents member visits OESJ
New York State Board of Regents member James C. Dawson toured the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Central School District on Monday, Jan. 6 – meeting with administrators and teachers and talking with students.

The state Board of Regents is a 17-member panel who are responsible for the general supervision of all educational activities within the state, presiding over the state Education Department and the state’s university system. Since 1993, Regent Dawson has represented Judicial District IV, which includes Hamilton, Fulton and Montgomery counties along with eight other counties. He is reported to be the first regent in the 220-year history of the Board of Regents to have visited every school district, and every school building, in his judicial district.

Monday’s visit was Dawson’s first to the district since the merger.

The regent visited all three buildings in the district stopping in at classrooms and having discussions with teachers and students. In the afternoon he met with a focus group of eight high school students who got the opportunity to ask Dawson about his work on the Board of Regents and educational issues such as the new Common Core Learning Standards.

He ended the day addressing the entire OESJ High School student body during an assembly where the regent encouraged students to finish school and pursue some form of higher education.

“You really have to think in terms of some post-secondary education opportunity. It doesn’t have to be university. There are lots and lots of things people can do in post-secondary education….” Regent Dawson said. “My overriding concern is that in today’s job market we get all of you up to the point where you have a high school diploma that allows you to do that post-secondary education.”

Like all school board members in New York State, Board of Regents members serve without pay. Since 1970, Regent Dawson has also served as a professor of geology at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Regent Dawson also recently toured the Gloversville school district and was scheduled to visit Johnstown schools on Tuesday.
