“I should tell you that all these years of schooling helped us in finding ourselves, but it didn’t. It helped us create ourselves,” valedictorian Andrew Wheelock said during his address. “We use our past experiences, things we have learned throughout our journey in school, and we mold ourselves into who we want to be. It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are. Everyone we know, classmates, teachers, friends and family, they have all affected us in some way. We have all had different experiences throughout high school, and we are all different. But in the end we all seek the same thing in life: happiness.”

Wheelock is bound for Syracuse University in the fall.

Salutatorian Alex Hart thanked the community and the teachers for their support throughout the years.

“Finally, our parents. They are the ones who drove us to school events, gave us money to get new school clothes, and always placed our interests ahead of their own. On behalf of my entire class, we thank you parents,” Hart, who is also bound for Syracuse, said.

St. Johnsville Superintendent Laura Lawrence complimented the class as an exceptional group of students.

“Set your goals high and remember to seek out those who support you,” the superintendent said. “Also, remember to help others whenever the opportunity arises for this is where true greatness lies.”

Members of the St. Johnsville High School Class of 2013 were: Xavier Bradshaw, Dylan Buley, Brandon Campione, Meghan Clarke, Samantha Cleveland, Maysie Czelusniak, Cassandra Jo Dufresne, Mackenzie Ferguson, Justin Graepel, Alex Hart, Katlyn Hazzard, Walter Lewis, Jamie Luckner, Dakota Mereness, Josiah Millington, Ronald Sanguine III, Andrew Smith, Tyler Smith, Emily Taylor, Danielle Tinkler, Andrew Wheelock III, Katelyn Wille and Merrill Worden.

The 2013 commencement was the last for the St. Johnsville district. On July 1, the new, merged Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Central School District will officially begin operation.
