School to open on Sept. 14; all students will operate under a hybrid model in 2020-21

Dear OESJ Families,

I hope everyone has continued to enjoy the beautiful weather that the summer months are providing us, albeit amidst a great deal of uncertainty. As we have continued to develop and modify our reopening plan, our fundamental purpose was to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and parents. While we have had to make many difficult decisions, we are confident that we have kept health and safety at the core of our mission and we strongly believe our finalized reopening plan reflects that. Please remember that this plan is fluid and constantly evolving. Moving forward, we will continue to evaluate our space and safety needs.

As I have said many times, the information and guidelines we receive are constantly changing and we do our best to be proactive and not reactionary. Just this week we received official notice that our state aid was going to see a reduction, in many cases a 20% decrease.

With that in mind we have decided that we will not be re-purposing the DH Robbins building for instruction for the 2020-2021 school year. Instead, we will be providing instruction in a hybrid model in both the OESJ Elementary School and the OESJ Jr./Sr. High School. A summary of those plans are outlined below.

We have also revised our 2020-2021 school calendar to provide four consecutive days of staff training at the start of September.   The first day of classes for students is now September 14th.  This adjustment to the calendar will allow for staff to be trained on items such as block scheduling, remote instruction, disinfecting and cleaning, etc. You can access a copy of the revised calendar via the following link:. Final OESJ School Calendar_20-21.pdf  Unfortunately, the printed calendars that you will receive will not reflect this change.

We have been holding our parent/community forums this week, with our final scheduled forum to be held tonight, August 20th, at 6 p.m. The focus of tonight’s forum will be food service and the instructional plan for students in grades PK – 6. The recordings of the first two forums are posted on our website. You can access those videos and the forum tonight by using the following link: OESJ Forum Reopening Link

We will be continuing to work on the details of items such as transportation, drop-off and pick-up, and student schedules over the next week. We will disseminate this information to students and parents as soon as possible. In the meantime, please continue to contact the Superintendent’s Office or your child’s building principal with any questions or concerns. As I have said many times, we are truly all in this together and your continued partnership is greatly appreciated and is vital to providing a quality educational experience in a safe and nurturing environment.
