Superintendent’s Letter – School closure extended to April 29 – NYS Regents exams in June canceled

Dear OESJ families and Staff,

As you may have heard, Governor Cuomo has extended the statewide school closure another two weeks, from April 15 until April 29, to minimize the spread of the coronavirus. If the closure is not extended schools will now reopen on April 29th. This includes the original April break week of April 13 – April 17 and April 10, Good Friday. During this continued closure the district will continue to provide continuity of instruction and will continue providing meals to families.

Also the New York State Education Department (NYSED) announced the cancellation of all June 2020 Regents examinations and issued guidance on graduation and course requirement changes.  These modifications apply to all students currently enrolled in grades 7 through 12 who were planning to take one or more of the June exams. As a result of the cancellation, students will be exempt from taking the June Regents but will receive Regents diploma credit if they pass, or have previously passed, the course associated with the exam.

Read the guidance memo from NYSED and the Frequently Asked Questions regarding graduation and the Regents. Please feel free to contact your principal with any questions.

Our staff is working very hard to keep the children of this district learning.  I encourage families to continue to work with their teachers and complete their at home learning to ensure students receive the credit that they have worked all year to earn. By working together, we will get through this challenging time.

Again thank you for your continued support and understanding during this most difficult time.

Sincerely,

Dr. Joseph L. Natale
Interim Superintendent
