OESJ sixth-graders climbed Kane Mountain in Caroga Lake as part of their Adirondack Studies on October 18th. Students used field guides and i-pads to identify native Adirondack Species after learning the history of the park in science class. They brought along their science journals to write down observations at the summit and participated in a “Nature Scavenger Hunt.” Students also had the chance to climb the Kane Mountain Fire Tower and enjoy the spectacular views. Heidi Sprouse, OESJ Pre-K teacher, and author spoke with the students before their trip. She talked about her book, “Adirondack Sundown” the first in her “Lost in the Adirondacks” series, which takes place in the wilderness surrounding Kane Mountain. Sixth graders’ names were put in a drawing and one boy and one girl each won a copy of the book!
