At his press briefing on Wednesday, July 8, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo gave an official timeline for districts to submit school reopening plans for fall 2020. Cuomo said the state will release reopening guidance for school districts on July 13, and that school districts will then submit their plans for reopening by July 31.
The Governor said the state will review school district plans the week of August 1-7 and a decision to reopen schools to students statewide in the fall will be made by the state at that time.
In order to develop the required plans for the state and to establish policies and procedures for reopening, the district has established an OESJ Reopening Task Force and eight subcommittees. The OESJ Reopening Task Force will be reviewing transportation, food service, overall health/safety, scheduling, extra-curricular activities, and cleaning procedures, as well as the recommendations of the subcommittees. This group will review all federal, state, and local guidance that is issued related to reopening schools.
The committee’s conversations have begun, but it is important for us to gather data from OESJ families and we have developed a survey to help us accomplish this. The opinions expressed will be important to us as we continue our internal conversations on how to approach school in September. Above all, our goal is to ensure safety for our students and staff, and in turn, their families at home, as we consider school going forward. You can access the survey by clicking here.
The OESJ CSD will be communicating with families through email and the website as reopening plans are finalized. Some information may be shared on social media as well. The district recommends that families continue to check the district website and your email throughout the summer for information. In the meantime, we understand your concerns and we ask for your patience and support.
We are committed to providing the best possible educational experience for all of our students while following the health and safety guidelines established by the CDC, New York State Department of Health, and the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
