In front of family and friends, the 38 members of the graduating Class of 2018 bid farewell to the halls of OESJ Jr./Sr. High School this evening. The fifth annual commencement was held in the school auditorium.

valedictorian speaks at podiumValedictorian Madison Richardson offered a few pieces of advice to the graduates:

“Take action. Every story you’ve ever connected with, every leader you’ve ever modeled, every little thing that you’ve ever accomplished is the result of taking action,” she said. “Everyone has a choice to choose. You need to decide what you want to define who you are. You can either be a passive victim of circumstance or you can be the active hero of your own life.”

student speaks at podiumSalutatorian Dakota Corapi talked about how she faced a lot of injuries and challenges growing up.

“The truth of the matter is you cannot be let down by the challenges that come your way, you have to overcome them and do the best that you can with the circumstances that you are given. And most importantly don’t change who you are because of this,” she said.

principal speaks at podiumFor Principal David Slater, this will be his last graduation. He is retiring. Slater began at OESJ in 2014. A former carpenter, his first educational job as as a math teacher at Cobleskill’s Golding Middle School in 1994.

“Don’t be afraid to take a chance in life when you have the opportunity,” he said, noting that his own experience of going from a carpenter to an educator proves it pays to take chances. “Have a great life or not — the Choice is Yours,” he told the graduates, echoing his daily morning announcements slogan.

man speaks at podiumSuperintendent David Halloran, noting that this is his last OESJ graduation after three years, told students to “always take the high road in life. It’s not always the easy thing but it’s the right thing.” He also encouraged them, as a generation, to move away from the anger and division of today’s politics that have permeated society. Halloran is leaving to become superintendent at the Gloversville Enlarged School District.

“You get out of life what you put into it,” Board of Education President Neil Clark told the graduates. “If you want something, you’re going to have to work for it.” He also told them to “be positive. It will make your life a lot more enjoyable.”
