Confirmed Case of COVID-19 at the Jr/Sr High School; All Students in Grades 7-12 to Pivot to Remote Learning

Dear OESJ Students, Families and Staff,

Over the weekend, OESJ CSD administrators were notified that a member of the OESJ Jr./Sr. High School community has been laboratory confirmed positive for COVID-19.

In order to allow appropriate time to work with the individual’s County Health Department regarding contact tracing and out of an abundance of caution, the OESJ Jr./Sr. High School will shift to our remote only learning model beginning on Monday, December 14th, through Wednesday, December 23rd. All students in grades 7-12 will return to in-person learning on Monday, January 4th following the Holiday recess. At this time, the Elementary building will remain open for in-person instruction for students in grades K-6. The Pre-K program will resume in-person instruction this Thursday, December 17th.

During the remote learning period in the Jr./Sr. High School transportation will continue to be provided for all out-of-district programs, including special education, career and technical education, PTech, AgTech, and Adirondack Academy. Meals will be provided for students at the Jr./Sr. High School and may be picked up at the Jr./Sr. High School main office/lobby between 10:30 a.m. and 12 noon. The main offices will remain open at the Jr./Sr. High School.

All students, whether they have been attending school in our hybrid model or remote, should plan to follow their current schedule at home using their Chromebooks, as teachers will be teaching remotely. Attendance will be taken and the expectation is that students will be attending classes and completing all required work remotely during this time period.

Again, this notification is part of our commitment to keeping you informed during these uncertain times. However, privacy laws restrict district officials from disclosing or confirming any personally identifiable information. Therefore, we cannot identify by name anyone who has tested positive. The individual who tested positive is in isolation for the recommended time and will not return to the building until cleared by their Department of Health.

Moving forward, we will continue to work closely with our local Departments of Health and we will follow their guidance on how to proceed. Please continue to conduct at-home screenings and maintain personal awareness of COVID symptoms for your children. We also ask that the community remains vigilant with wearing masks and washing hands.

Visit our website or contact your child’s school principal directly if you have any questions or concerns, including issues with your child’s school-issued Chromebook. I realize that these are difficult times, but I assure you that the OESJ CSD is fully committed to providing a safe learning environment for all of its students and staff.
