Polar winds have blown into the OESJ Elementary School with the arrival of P.A.R.P. (Parents as Reading Partners). P.A.R.P. officially kicked off on Monday, January 23rd with a visit from PETER Penguin of Antarctica. PETER is here to Prepare Everyone to Enjoy Reading! He will accompany the children on a polar expedition to Antarctica and the Arctic Circle as they learn about the regions and wildlife through books, presentations, author visits, and assemblies.
PETER even showed the children how to waddle like a penguin so they could practice their own waddles to the tune of “Walk Like a Penguin” by Rick Charette.
With PETER’s visit the students also had the opportunity to review the rules of P.A.R.P.: 1. read at least 15 minutes per night with someone at home, 2. read at least 5 nights per week, 3. have the reading record sheet signed by a grown-up, and 4. return the record sheet every Tuesday.
To inspire the students to jump into a good book, TheatreWorksUSA presented “The Teacher from the Black Lagoon and Other Stories”. With their talented cast of actors and singers they brought books to life such as Dogzilla (by Dav Pilkey) and Grumpy Bird (by Jeremy Tankard). They encouraged children to open a book and travel with their imagination.
