Students Beautify the School

Students in Chris Smith’s Plant Science and Technology course helped to beautify the school through a hands-on learning project. This year the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville CSD made the bus loading zone at the Junior / Senior High School safer by erecting a circular retaining wall on the inside of the bus loop. The OESJ maintenance staff constructed the wall and filled it with soil. This is where the plant science students took over. Students learned all facets of creating a garden from scratch. They played a role in the layout and planting of the mums. Once the mums were arranged, students broke into groups to tackle the task of planting over fifty mums. Over the two days of planting students were able to work together to achieve the task. While planting students were learning about planting depth, plant spacing, plant arrangement, and proper planting practices.   In the spring, the class will re-design the flower bed with other flowers and shrubs with hopes to grow some of the plants from seed.
