OESJ Elementary Dedicates Field Days

On June 14th the OESJ elementary school dedicated the annual field days to two pillars of the community in Niceta Mueller and Jim Carter.  These two individuals exemplified the philosophies of physical education and lifelong fitness. Both individuals have demonstrated commitment to children and fitness.

Mrs. Mueller was a physical education teacher and coach for over 30 years in the Oppenheim district. She touched many children's lives and inspired many of her students to go on and become physical education teachers.

Mr. Carter was active in the St. Johnsville community coaching youth sports as well as being on the board of the St. Johnsville youth center. His focus and drive was on helping every kid, no matter where they came from, to be a better person. Mr. Carter passed away this past winter and his family accepted the honor on his behalf.

The students later in the afternoon participated in a fun afternoon of water field days.

STEM Aluminum Foil Boat Project

Mrs. Blanc's and Mrs. Karen Jones' STEM group just completed an Aluminum Foil boat unit. The object of the unit was to build a boat out of aluminum foil to hold as many pennies as possible. During this unit, students researched what makes a boat float and what factors go into a boat being able to carry cargo. Students were introduced to vocabulary such as- density, mass, buoyancy, cargo, and grams. Students were then given a 6x6 inch piece of aluminum foil. Students designed a boat that they thought would hold the most pennies. After the first trial, students were able to redesign their boat for a second trial. Students then graphed their data and discovered that square shaped boats with the "cargo" weight evenly distributed held the most pennies. On Friday, June 10th the STEM group presented their boats and information to their class. Bailie Richardson's boat held 90 pennies on the day of the presentation! STEM group members: Kali Hazard, Lily Arduini, Bailie Richardson, Delton Keba, Dominic Douglass, and Aidyn Macri.

OESJ Athletes Attend WAC Leadership Conference

Students in grades 7-12 were chosen to attend the Western Athletic Conference
(WAC) Leadership Conference held at FMCC. There, they listened to a guest speaker about what it takes to be a leader and knowing your role on a sports team. He also stressed the importance of academics and how scholarship should come first in a student/athlete's life because the reality is that very few high school ball players will go on to play at the college level.  The students were then broken into groups, where they participated in activities with students from all of the other school districts from the WAC. It was a great afternoon for the students to mingle with students whom they have only seen as adversaries in athletics.

Mr. Crowe and Mrs. Jenkins have been busy as Christmas elves for a couple weeks now making video "gifts" for their eighth grade math students. Students now have have access to lesson review videos posted on Google Classroom. The treasure in the "gift" is that the students can have access to help even when they are outside of the classroom or even outside of school!  Videos had started out slow without sound, but have moved on to audio accompaniment.  The videos bridge the gap between school and home by giving parents the ability to help their students and giving students the ability to reference the videos for help at any time.  Check out a sample video here.

IMPORTANT ELEMENTARY P.M. PICK UP CHANGE AND STUDENT SAFETY NOTICE
Our elementary school is interested in working with our parents who pick their children up at the end of the day to make the pick up process more safe and efficient.

Due to a recent incident in the parking lot where a car was hit, we are re-evaluating the process to be sure our students are safe.

We have had a meeting where we discussed a plan to improve safety of students and traffic flow during dismissal. Our plan is to move staff parking out of the side of the cafeteria lot nearest to the cafeteria starting on November 6th so that parents may park there. We will continue to have two to three traffic attendants out there to help with student safety and traffic flow.

We are open to helpful ideas that will help us arrive at the best possible solution to our problem. Please be sure to stay on the sidewalks as much as possible when walking to and from the building.

In the future, please refer to both Facebook and our school's web page for breaking news.

Board of Regent Ouderkirk Tours Elementary School

On September 15, 2015, OESJ Elementary school received a surprise visitor. Beverly L. Ouderkirk, newly appointed member of the Board of Regents of New York State, was visiting our HFM BOCES on September 14th and speaking to local school officials and staff. When she heard that our school was designated as “Persistently Dangerous”, she felt a visit was in order.

After a tour of the school and classroom visits with Dr. Michel, Superintendent Halloran and Principal Marzeski, what she saw was certainly to the contrary. “This does not look like a persistently dangerous school as compared to the others on the list. This is a wonderful school and I see many smiles and happy faces.”  Regent Ouderkirk discussed with administrators the reasons for getting on the list in the first place and the steps being taken for over reporting. Superintendent Halloran stated that this is a perfect opportunity to build our school culture and continue with our focus on character education.

Pictured is Regent Ouderkirk visiting with students Kendra Smith (left) and Brianna Battisti (right) in Mrs. Marchese's fourth grade classroom.
