OESJ board to meet once a month, regular committees meetings established
LReducing the number of full board meetings to be held each month, the OESJ Board of Education has established the first Wednesday of the month as its new, regular monthly meeting date.

The meeting location will alternate between the OESJ High School auditorium in St. Johnsville and the OESJ Elementary/Middle School cafeteria in Oppenheim. Meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m., unless otherwise noted. The board’s next meeting is set for April 2 at the high school.

The move to one full board meeting a month is part of a restructuring of the board’s policy and decision making process that also includes the commencement of regular, public committee meetings.

The board has five standing committees – Buildings and Grounds, Curriculum and Instruction, Finance, Personnel and Policy.

The Curriculum and Instruction Committee will meet at 4:45 p.m. on the second Thursday of month in the high school principal’s office.

The Policy Committee and the Buildings and Grounds Committee will meet on the third Thursday of the month in the middle school library. The Policy Committee meeting will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the Buildings and Grounds Committee scheduled to immediately follow.

The Finance Committee and the Personnel Committee will meet on the fourth Monday of the month in the superintendent’s office in Oppenheim. The Finance meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Personnel set to immediately follow.

“The board has established regular, public committee meetings in an effort to be as transparent with the public as possible,” Interim Superintendent Thomas Gallagher said. “The new structure will also allow us to be more efficient, and allow more time at full board meetings to focus on what’s needed for the academic success for our students.”

Standing committees, which include two board members each, will focus on issues related to their charge and make recommendations that will be forwarded to the full board for action.
