POSTED 4/4/2014First graders study the Earth, volcanoes
OESJ Elementary first graders in Jean Van Valkenburgh's class recently finished a unit on the Earth and geology.
As part of the unit, the student used soap, vinegar, warm water and baking soda to create a model of a volcano eruption. Students used coffee grounds and other recycled materials in art class to make the volcanoes themselves.
During the unit, students learned how heat, pressure and time cause changes in our Earth. The first graders also got a hands-on lesson on rocks receiving a visit from "Gerry the Geologist."
