For the second year in a row, students at OESJ’s David H. Robbins Elementary School Friday, March 21 earned a Radio Disney Dance Concert as a reward for their high ranking in the Get Active, Get Fit Challenge.

Sponsored by Empire Blue Cross and Radio Disney, the Get Active, Get Fit Challenge encourages students and families to achieve fitness by engaging in fun activities. In order to successfully complete the challenge, students had to be active for at least 20 minutes a day for a minimum of 40 of the 55 days of the event, which ran from Sept. 30 through Nov. 23, 2013.

Either at home or at school, students in grades K-5 engaged in a variety of activities for the challenge such as playing soccer, dancing, walking the dog, jumping rope and more.

The D.H. Robbins students recorded their activities, and were named among the top five schools that participated in the challenge. As a reward, the students earned a visit from the staff of Radio Disney who put on an assembly with dancing, music and sports challenges such as basketball and hula hoop relays. “There is a huge emphasis for students to do well academically, and while we place a great deal of effort in our school on reading, writing and math, we also know that we need to nurture the whole child,” D.H. Robbins Principal Rebecca Marzeski said. “It's all about balance. Too much of any one thing is never a good idea. Children need to know that we encourage them to balance academics with physical activity.”
